Difference in Pakistani Graduation and International Graduation Level, All Levels of Education Explained

The title may be a little confusing to you. That is, probably, because you are unaware of an important piece of information that every educated Pakistani must know, especially, those who plan to go abroad for education in future. The purpose of writing this article is to inform all my educated fellows about Levels (years) of education called Graduation in Pakistani that follows a different set of rules than those of international. Following is step by step easy explanation of these concepts and all the level of education recognized all over the world.

Pakistani Graduation

What is graduation in Pakistan? Basically, all the education we get after the Intermediate, that is 12 years of education, is called Graduation in Pakistan.

Bachelors:  After intermediate if you have studied two more years and completed 14 years of education, referred to as Bachelors, is Graduation and you are called a Graduate.

Masters:  Now after your bachelors if you study for two more years completing 16 years of education, referred to as Masters, is also Graduation and you are called a Graduate or Masters.

Often four years of education after intermediate, called BS, is also referred as Bachelors instead of Masters. For example, BSCS a four year degree, means Bachelors of Sciences in Computer Sciences.

MPhil:   Going further, studying for two more years completing 18 years of education, referred to as MPhil (Magister Philosophiae or Philosophiae Magister or most commonly used Masters of Philosophy), is basically also Graduation and we don’t have specific name for this level of scholar.

PhD:   Next up level is called PhD (Philosophiae Doctor or Doctor Philosophiae or most commonly used Doctor of Philosophy), in which you study for more 2 – 3 years completing about 20 -22 years of education, this level is, as a matter of fact, also called Graduation and you are given the honorary title of Doctor though you don’t check patients and give medicines. To differentiate them from medical doctors, they are referred to as Philosophy Doctor. This is the highest level of education degree you can get in Pakistan.

Mentioned above were all levels of education in Graduation and their names in Pakistan. Following are the two levels of Graduation.

Pakistani Undergraduate:

A student studying under level of Bachelors is called undergraduate in Pakistan. You can say, if you are studying in 13th or 14th year of education, you are an undergraduate.

Pakistani Postgraduate:

A student studying, over level of Bachelors is called postgraduate in Pakistan. If you are studying in Masters, MPhil or PhD; you are a Postgraduate student. Any year of study over 14th is considered Postgraduate in Pakistan.

International Graduation

International Graduation has higher level of education than of Pakistan. All the education we get after is 14 years of education, is called Graduation on international level.

Bachelors:  If you have completed 16 years of education then you are referred to as Bachelor or graduate and this level is called Bachelors or Graduation on international level.

Masters:  Now after your bachelors if you study for two more years completing 18 years of education, referred to as Masters, is also Graduation and you are called a Graduate or Masters.

MPhil:   MPhil is also 18 years of education. It is also Graduation. It is just same as Masters, these both are just different type of education and degree. MPhil is more of research based study when compared to MS or Masters.

PhD:   Next up level is called PhD in which you study for more 2 – 3 years completing about 20 - 22 years of education. However, on international level, it is not highest level.
