Finding part time jobs in Germany during Studies for survival

Dear Students,

At “Etimad Education Consultants” we try our best to provide the quality services and accurate information to our clients in order to achieve their career goals. The following information will help to understand the working rights available to students whilst they are studying in Germany.

As mostly students ask about part time job opportunities during studies I hope this information will help them to get an idea what kind of jobs they can find and how they can cover their living expenses.

1. Student Research Assistantship / HiWi / werkstudent

This kind of job is mostly related to research projects. It is possible to find it in the University with some professor/assistant to help them in their project or in any other task. Mostly these jobs are related to Programming/Software testing and they need persons with such skills. But that depends on the University, in which you are studying and what kind of such activities they are running.

Other than University you can find such jobs in a company. In this case, they also require people with required skills that mostly are related to programming/IT. This job is part time and you can work 90 days in one year and average earning is about 10€ per hour (Depends on University/Company). Normally students do such jobs with 40-60 hours per month (as you have to manage study along with it. Such kind of jobs are mostly flexible and you can do work when you find time during the day. But sometimes they may assign a time slot to work between that.

2. Odd jobs/Outside University

Such kinds of jobs are not related to technical/academic work. It may be in a hotel as dish washer or in a factory for packing material. There may be no regular activity in such jobs, there may be more work in summer and less in winter or any other situation. So in this case there is no continuity.

Average earning is 10€ per hour

Students from the new EU member states and all other international students can extend their residence for a further year provided they have completed their studies successfully. You have this one year to find a job which is appropriate to your education. In order to extend your residence permit for the purpose of seeking a job you must prove that your livelihood is secured. As a graduate, you are still allowed to work 90 full or 180 half days per year in side jobs and temporary positions while looking for an appropriate employment. If you earn more than 400€ per month then you have to pay pension, which is 9-10% of your earning and it is compulsory for every student who earns more than 400€.

Conversion to Permanent residence

If university graduates find a suitable position their previous residence permit can be converted to a temporary residence permit for the purpose of employment. After five years of working you can receive a permanent residence permit.
