This is the opportunity for you to present the information that would otherwise be given during a face-to-face interview. If you include the following components in your personal statement for graduate school, it will help you stand out among the other applicants.
Capturing the Readers Attention
The easiest way to approach the personal statement for graduate school is by imagining that you only have ten minutes with the admissions committee to tell your story and provide the reason why you are the best candidate.
Carefully read the instructions before you begin writing to make sure you are being asked to write a personal statement as opposed to a statement of purpose.
Keep in mind that your essay has to capture the reader’s attention in the beginning and encourage them to want to read through to the end.
Tell a Story
Your personal statement for graduate school should read like a story.
It is tempting to attempt to impress the reader with a perfected and sophisticated vocabulary and although perfect grammar is important, do not confuse grammar with your vocabulary.
Do not make the personal statement to complicated or uninteresting.
Include information such as how elementary school affected your college choice and what did you do to get there.
For example, was there a particular situation or person, maybe a teacher, who had an effect on your decision? Did your cultural background play a role in your career and research interests? Turn your life into a story, find a theme and encourage the admissions committee to be excited to finish reading your story.
What are your Skills?
Your personal statement to graduate skill should reflect on how your background affected your natural skills and talents as well as the skills and talents you chose to develop.
For example, did the extracurricular activities you pursued work with your academic goals to help make you the person you are today? Keep in mind that the admissions committee doesn’t care that you are a skilled pool player;
they want to know how playing pool affected you as a person and what effect it has on your educational and career goals.
For example, did playing on a pool league make you a better team leader?
Address your Weaknesses
Your personal statement will most likely be the only opportunity you will have to explain any weaknesses in your application, so take advantage of it.
Provide detail, but focus on concise information, not wordiness.
The best way to turn negative information into the positive is by explaining what you have learned from the weakness.
For example, if the last semesters grades were poor, don’t give excuses as to why they were poor, instead describe what you did to improve them.
Closing Paragraph of the Personal Statement
Finish up your personal statement by providing information about where you see yourself in the future, what your goals and ambitions are and how the program you are applying to can contribute to these goals. Make your case, by giving specific details as to how this particular program can help you reach your future goals.
Balance out your goals, by describing how your future goals coincide with your past achievements.
Before submitting your personal statement for graduate school, thoroughly read it and ask a friend or family member to read it as well.
Make sure there are no errors in grammar, punctuation or spelling and that it is formatted according to the university’s requirements.
Best of luck
