Matsumae Research Fellowship 2026 in Japan | Fully Funded

The fellowship focuses on supporting research in:

  • Natural Sciences
  • Engineering
  • Medicine

Applicants can pick their research topics while working with their host professors in Japan.

Selected fellows will get:

  • A monthly stipend of JPY 220,000 for research and living expenses.
  • An arrival fund of JPY 120,000 to help with settling in.
  • Round-trip airfare (economy class) from your home country to Japan.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply, you need to:

  • Be a non-Japanese citizen.
  • Have a Ph.D. when you apply.
  • Be 45 or younger (born in or after 1980).
  • Show you can speak English or Japanese well.
  • Get approval from a host institution in Japan before you apply.
  • Not have lived in Japan for a long time (short trips for conferences or tourism are okay).
  • Be working in your home country and plan to return after the fellowship to help with local development.
