Top Ten Tips To Convince Your Parents To Let You Study Abroad

  • Prove yourself in your soil first:

In order to convince your parents that you will be alright in the land far away, you need to first prove them living an example life here in your own country.  For example the young adults who have always been “ Good Boy “ from their teenage i.e. good academic performance, helpful in house chores and with sober personality are more likely to convince their parents then the careless attitude spoiled child. Behave like a grown up if you want to take big decision.

  • Make them believe in your dream:

I have seen lots of boys with not so serious attitude saying to their parents that they will go abroad and earn lot of money. Your parents will never send you away from them just for the monetary charm. So firstly, you need to be clear about your goal that whether you wish to go abroad just to earn money in easy way or you are seeing this as a life changing opportunity. Give them a clear vision so they can imagine you in that future.

  • You will not be alone:

I remember that whenever I used to ask my parents to permit to go on distant tours in college. Their first question was used to be “Who else is going with you”? So when it comes to go and live another country, parents become really anxious about your wellbeing in another country all alone. For you it might sound fun that you are going to live your life all alone in another country but for your parents it is the nightmare. So look for persons or relative or any family friend in the country where you wish to go to convince your parents that you will not be all alone in your thick and thin.

  • Money will always be big concern:

Many parents freak out when they get to know the expenses. So you need to have a plan to cover the expenses. If you are going on a scholarship, explain it very well to your parents. If you are self-financing but still need some help from your parents then tell them how you plan to return them the amount once you get settle in abroad.  If you are fortunate enough to have parents who are willing and able to pay your expenses, then be sure to tell them that how much are grateful for this and how you will never forget this

  • Personal Grooming:

This is not just about living in another country, there is much to explore, you're going to a foreign country to learn, study, experience and explore. Being a bilingual has a huge scope in job market. You'll also get to meet people from diverse cultures and you will learn to live with open mind and big heart. Tell your parents that you will become an independent open minded human being.

  • Do not hesitate to show your patriotic feelings:

Our parents are first patriotic citizens then our parents. Tell them that how getting high class education and being able to represent you country on international platforms will make you and them proud. You will not just live for yourself but will have a big purpose in life.

  • Do not be self-centered:

While explaining your idea of moving abroad for a degree or internship, do not just think or talk about your feelings, ideas or emotions but also put yourself in their shoes. In this way you will be able to speculate their concerns and reservations. By thinking about their concern and looking from that angle, you will be able to get well thought answers for them.

  • You will be safe:

If you belong from the country whose international image is not so good or you have ethnic, skin or religious differences then it is likely to be a difficult journey. So first work on that whether the university you are taking admission in or the state you will live in, treats people like you well and how is the community behavior and habits.

  • Discuss with someone whose been abroad:

If you have a family friend who already studied abroad, set up a meeting so your parents can ask them questions about their experience and lifestyle in abroad. Parents have concerns about the western party culture and drinking habit etc. So they can ask that person and he can assure them that it is always a personal choice.

  •  Improved living standards :

Many parents send their children to abroad to get job and support family. So you can convince them that even you are going for your own education, you can support them by doing part time jobs in free time or summer breaks.
