What Career to Select in Computer Science

Computer Sciences and Information Technology is the top trending fashion in education of Pakistan these days. Every student after his intermediate wants to study Computer Science. In your degree of Computer Sciences, you are mostly confuse which field in Computer Sciences to choose as Career. You are taught almost every field in 4 years of education. If you are yet to start this as higher education then there are things you should know first. There are three general degrees (4 year) of this field.

1.     BS Computer Sciences

2.    BS Software Engineering

3.    BS Information Technology

To be honest all three of them are almost same. Most of the courses taught in them are same. You are taught 6 courses each for first 6 semester then 4 courses in 7^th and 2 in last semester. If you are still start study and are confuse which one to choose out of three above then your answer should be BS Computer Sciences. BSCS degree is considered to be of higher value because of a few certain courses taught in it.

Which University to Choose:

If you are thinking of going abroad for studies, it’s a very good idea. Even Pakistan’s top Universities are nothing when compared to International level. It’s not that Pakistan universities are bad. Quality of education in Pakistani Universities is very good. They have a very qualified staff. But there are not much Computer Scientist and there is a lack of research facilities. But if you are to study BS Computer Sciences, you are guaranteed to get a job.

Even if you study in Pakistan you can still apply for job abroad. Software Engineers are highly paid. If not job, you can still do freelancing. If you are skilled in you field, you will get job anywhere in the world. Following are some basic Computer Sciences choices, you can select as your career. You are/will be taught about them in you student life.

Designer:

As designer in Computer Sciences you have two options:

Front-End Developer:  They create all the front end of a website. It is easy but for designing you are required have a creative mind. You can do this job if you know HTML/CSS, Bootstrap, WordPress, JavaScript, JQuery or some other skill like them. A front end developer/designer as fresh internee can earn 10 to 15 thousand and as professional up to 50 thousand. But as a software engineer you can do other more technical jobs.

User Interface Designer:  They are the designer that don’t do programming but require exceptional innovative designing skill. They use some tool like Photoshop or Corel Draw and design for website or any kind of application. They also start from 15 to 20 thousand and a professional can go up to 150 thousand.

Web Developer:

A web developer develops Websites. He does the back end of a website. You have many choices to select for web developing. You need have knowledge of a programming language or some interfaces used for web development. PHP, JSP, C#, Asp.net, Laravel, Ruby on Riels, if you have any of the mentioned skills you can become a web developer.

A fresh web developer starts with 10 – 20 thousand and a professional can go up to 100,000 depending on skills and experience. Web jobs are most easily available. 80% of the IT industry works with Web Development.

Mobile Computing:

In Mobile Computing, you develop applications for smart phones. This type of programming require good programming skills. Major mobile computing is divided in two categories.

Android: They develop applications or games for Android users. They earn about 15 – 20 thousand as fresh. In two years they can earn 50 – 70 thousand and can go up to 2 lac as experienced professional. They earn more than Web Developers and Designers. You need to have knowledge of Mobile computing with Java or C# on Android Studio and Asp or some other platform like Phone Gap or Unity for this kind of job.

IOS:  They develop applications or games for IPhone users. Environment and skills for this work is a little expensive so they earn even more than Android Programmers. But they start same with 15 – 20 thousand as fresh.

Desktop Application:

Software application development began with desktop applications, which could be used on standalone machines only. Word processors and media players can be considered to be typical desktop applications. Desktop Application programmers develop applications for desktop systems of any kind i.e. Windows, Ubuntu etc. You need to have knowledge of programming language like C and Java. They also earn more than Web Developers.

Database Administrator:

Every software house has a Database Administrator also known as DBA that controls all their Database work. Database is not as simple as it sounds because it requires some good skill and knowledge to do this job. Data is the most important asset of a company and DBA have to manage it. They also earn good. They start with 10-20 thousand and go up to 1 lac. Make sure you learn Introduction to Database and Data Ware Housing well in university and have a good knowledge of Oracle.

Game Developer:

These developers are specialized in development of games. If you like gaming and think you would like develop some then this might be your field. They make all kinds of games for Android, IPhone and desktop or of any platform. They all start with same but once you are experienced and skilled enough, you take big jumps on your salary. They can also go up to 1.5 lac per month.

Multimedia Programmer:

They are the programmers for designing. They do the coding for all effects and multimedia on software or gaming. You need to have an innovative mind and a sense of designing to succeed in this field. They also earn same as other programmers.

SEO Specialist:

They are Search Engine Optimization Specialist. They increase the traffic of a website. They optimize a website in a way that website comes on top of google search list when searched something related to it. They can earn up to 70 thousand in Pakistan if they are experienced.

IT Consultant:

They are like IT manager. They solve all computer and software related problems of a company. You work for a company resolve every issue that come up. You pay here depends on the company.

IT Trainer:

If nothing else, you still have the option to become a teacher. You can teach short courses or can join an institute to teach regular classes. Trainers also earn about same as any programmer depending on institute you join and level of courses you teach.

Network Engineer:

Network engineers are responsible for implementing, maintaining, supporting, developing and, in some cases, designing communication networks within an organization or between organizations. Their job is to make sure the high availability network structure to provide maximum performance. Networking is a pretty vast and interesting field. You can also go to security side of network. You have enough knowledge and skills you can be Cyber Security expert. Depending on your skills and company you work for you can earn from 15 thousand to 1 lac.

If you are programmer, it does not mean you will remain a programmer your whole life. You get promotions. If you are first a junior programmer, you will first be promoted to senior programmer after that may be team lead, Supervisor or Manager depending on your job.

Take time to learn and see what field interest you. See, what work you like doing. Then select that field as your career so you can your job. If you don’t like your work, you will end up hating your job and life and may have to restart the whole career as fresh candidate. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
