If you're a new biomedical scientist looking to boost your research career, check out the Helen Hay Whitney Foundation (HHWF) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. Founded in 1947, this foundation has been a great support for early-career scientists, helping them do important research and grow into future leaders in the field.
Fellowship Overview
The HHWF Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is a three-year program that offers full funding to help early-career scientists in basic biomedical research. It's meant to expand their training and experience by encouraging them to work in labs that are different from where they trained before. Each year, the foundation usually awards about 23 to 25 fellowships from a competitive group of around 300 applicants.

Eligibility Criteria
You can apply for the Helen Hay Whitney Postdoctoral Fellowship if:
- You received your Ph.D. (or equivalent) within the last 2 years, or your M.D. (or M.D.-Ph.D.) within the last 4 years by the application deadline.
- You've spent no more than 1 year in your postdoctoral lab before the application deadline.
They usually don’t give the fellowship to people who want to stay in the same lab where they did most of their Pre doctoral or postdoctoral work, so switching labs is a good idea.
Just a heads up: only one fellowship is given out per lab each year. If there are several applications from the same lab, the Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee will pick one. Plus, no more than two fellows can come from the same lab at the same time, and if a lab wins two years in a row, they can't apply for a third year.
Fellowship Benefits
The HHWF Postdoctoral Research Fellowship provides:
- An annual stipend of $73,000.
- Extra funds to help with research costs.
- Travel expenses covered for the fellow and their family when they move to the fellowship location.
The aim of these benefits is to support fellows in their research and help them get started on their independent research careers.
