GRE Scores Report

You may request that your test results be sent to up to four graduate schools or fellowship sponsors as part of the test fee. At the conclusion of the computer-based GRE® revised General Test, you will be prompted to identify the recipients of your test results. Ask the test center administrator for the appropriate form to indicate unlisted institutions if an institution is not listed. Before you leave the testing facility, fill out the form and turn it in. Once you exit the testing facility, the form will not be accepted.

At the test center, you will be able to see your unofficial Verbal and Quantitative scores; however, your Analytical Writing score will not be visible due to the essay scoring procedure. Score reports are not available in printed copy at test centers. Within 4-6 weeks of your test date, official Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing scores will be sent to you and the designated score recipients.

GRE Score Range

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a standardized test that is used by many graduate schools and business schools as part of the admissions process.

  • The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections are scored on a scale of 130 to 170, with one-point increments. The Analytical Writing section is scored on a scale of 0 to 6, with half-point increments.

  • A "good" or "competitive" score on the GRE can vary depending on the graduate program or business school you are applying to. However, generally speaking, scores in the 150-160 range for Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning and 4.0-5.0 for Analytical Writing are considered competitive.

It's important to note that graduate programs and business schools have different GRE score requirements, so it's best to check with the schools you're interested in to find out their specific score requirements.

GRE Negative Marking

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) does not have negative marking. This means that test-takers will not lose any points for answering a question incorrectly. Because there is no negative marking on the GRE, it's best to guess on questions that you're unsure of, rather than leaving them blank.

GRE Score Related Policies

The GRE program has several policies related to scores:

  • Score reporting: Scores are available online approximately 10-15 days after the test date. Test takers can choose to have their scores sent to up to four graduate programs or business schools for free when they register for the test. Additional score reports can be ordered for a fee.

  • Score validity: GRE scores are valid for five years after the test date. Some graduate programs may have different score validity requirements, so it's important to check with the program directly.

  • Score cancellation: Test takers have the option to cancel their scores at the test center immediately after finishing the test. If scores are cancelled, they will not be reported and cannot be reinstated.

  • Score improvement by retaking GRE: The GRE General Test may be taken once every 21 days for a maximum of five times in a rolling 12-month period that lasts continuously (365 days). This holds true even if you removed your results from an earlier test. The GRE Subject Tests are available for you to take whenever you'd like..

  • Score verification: GRE scores can be verified if there is a question about the accuracy of the score. This process is called Score Verification Service.
