Preparing this much in advance will save you from all troubles that could possibly go wrong. Even till the last time many students have no idea how they can get admission in a university that is far away from their home in an another country. Whether you are applying for undergraduate or postgraduate, process of taking admission is almost similar.
In this article, I am going to tell you complete application process to study in a foreign university in an easy step by step approach. This same method is used no matter which country you are applying for. Make sure you know the deadline for admissions in the country you chose as your study abroad destination. United Kingdom has a little difference in admission procedure compared to world. That is also clearly defined below.
Step 1 - Select a University
This step actually comes after you have decided a country where you will go to study abroad. There are about 50 study abroad destination and you can choose any of them. Pakistan is also one of them by the way. Then comes the part to select a university. This is also very important a slight mistake here can cause you to leave the university later or spend miserable few years of your life there. Question here is how do you avoid this mistake. Worry not, I have an article written on it. If you follow those instructions, you will have nothing to worry about. Click the link to see my article How to Select Right University to Study Abroad.
After you have selected a number of universities that you like also make sure that they will like you too. I mean that you can get admission in the university. To be on safe side, apply in more than universities. Now go to step 2.
Step 2 - Gather All Required Documents
In order to get admission in a university, you will first have to submit some documents mostly academic. These documents include your previous degree’s certificates, mark sheets, passport etc. Some of these documents you will probably already have. However, there are some requirements that you need to work on. Here see All Documents You Need to Submit for Admission in a Foreign University.
Documents to Prepare Months in Advance
First is Passport. University may also demand for Passport copies. Passport has an expiry date so not many people always have a passport. Getting a passport can be time consuming so it is better to apply for passport prior hand. This way you will have it in your hand anytime you need it.
Second important document that students won’t already have is English proficiency certificate. If you are from a Non-English country like Pakistan and India, you will need to prove to university that you can understand English language and won’t have any problem understanding the lecture or in communication. Most common of these are IELTS and TOEFL. You get the opportunity to take part in these tests about twice a month. However, these tests also require preparation to get good scores. Here see Everything You Need To Know About IELTS. If your university requires TOEFL certificate, Here are Complete Details About TOEFL.
Step 3 - Take Required Tests
Universities also required international students to take part in some sort of tests. These tests can divided in two major categories.
1. English Proficiency Tests
2. Technical Tests
English proficiency tests are like IELTS and TOEFL that are discussed in previous step. Getting its certificate can take up to 3 months after preparation. Technical tests have many types that vary according to the country. Technical tests may be taken by the university or they will ask to pass a test like SAT. Here see All Tests You Must Pass to Study Abroad. Make sure you visit the official website of selected university to see if they have any additional requirement like Character Certificate.
Step 4 - Submit the Application
After you are done with the previous steps then you will go online to submit the application form. You will go to the website and navigate to page where they have admission form. You will then fill and submit the application. Make sure you make no mistake in filling the form. If you are applying to a university in United Kingdom, they have a little different procedure. Instead of going to the website of desired university, all applications are submitted through UCAS. It is no problem and easy so you go nothing to worry about. Here you can see How to Apply for Admission in UK Universities.
Step 5 - Upload Your Academic Records
After or during submitting the online application form, you will be required to submit all relevant documents mentioned above. These documents will be uploaded with the form in soft copy. So you will need to scan the documents in advance. Make sure all scans are clear and in high definition.
Step 6 - Complete Visa Requirements
If university accepts you as their student, they will send a ‘Student Pass’. Using that student pass you can apply for visa to study in that country. Since you are going for education, you will definitely need Student visa and this requires a proof from university that they have enrolled you as their student. Along with the Student Pass, you will need to gather all documents required by embassy or consulate. These documents are almost same as the documents you submitted to the university. They may also call you for an interview.
Malaysia has a little different procedure here to get this student visa. Still nothing to worry about as I have also published an article to guide you about this ambiguity. Here see How to Get Malaysian Student Visa.
After Applying:
After you have applied for admission in university, you will need to wait for some time while they make their decision. It can take up to a few months. University may also conduct an interview before finalizing your admission. Moreover, embassy or consulate that will issue your visa may also call you for interview. You can prepare for them while waiting for the response from the university. If you are worried about these interviews, here see 10 Worst Mistakes Students do in University Admission Interview. Reading this article will prepare you in advance and improve your chance of passing them.
Good Luck!
