LAHORE: Associate Professor at the Department of Biology, Dr. Zakir Ullah has been awarded a research funding of PKR 7.1 million by the HEC (Higher Education Commission) to study the regulation of specific genes that are twisted off during the growth of the human placenta.
The group of researcher led by the professor emphases on considering the behaviour of specialised stem’s cell which produce the placenta, a special organ important for child growth during pregnancy. In this research project Dr. Zakir Ullah will interpret how nature permits specific types of placental cells to collect large quantities of DNA to develop ‘polyploid’ giant cells during embryonic progress. He will do effort on suppression of death reaction genes in polyploid cells. Death response genes are disabled in a number of diseases including Alzheimer’s and cancer disease.
Fruitful completion of the project will help researchers to recognize the basic apparatuses of molecular circuits and human growth that are interrupted in diseases.
